EUGENE Tebuteb, the CNMI Department of Labor’s director of employment services, said the DOL Job Fair set for Friday aims to mitigate the workforce losses caused by the CW “touchback” rule.
The job fair will be held on Sept. 15 at the Crowne Plaza Resort from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In an email to Variety, Tebuteb said job seekers are sought for the following positions: general manager, human resources manager, supervisor, I.T. specialist/network server, trade technician & assistant, aircraft maintenance technician, general maintenance worker, load planning specialist, U.S. Army (mechanic, supply specialist, engineer, military police), cashier, tour and retail, housekeeping assistant, food & beverage service, bakery sales associate, cook, cook helper, carpenter, mason, heavy equipment operator, painter, accounting technician, interior designer, maintenance engineer & technician, control manager, safety manager, and many more.
Tebuteb said qualified applicants can be hired on the spot for listed openings at the job fair.
“Some of the more critical positions to be filled are those that are currently held by Commonwealth-Only Transitional Workers (CW-1),” Tebuteb said, adding that construction, ground maintenance, food preparation, and many other similar job positions need to be filled when CWs “exit” the island as required by the touchback rule.
The exit period can take up to seven months.
“Like previous job fairs, the most palpable goal of the department is to increase the size of the workforce by providing the means to gainful employment,” Tebuteb said. “This fair is slightly different from previous ones because it showcases specific industries that may have a higher propensity for loss as a result of the touchback rule that will go into effect by the end of this month.”
He added, “As the touchback deadline approaches, and as long as the CW-1 program is in place, it makes perfect sense to act decisively to mitigate loss. If you need a job or lack the resources required for getting a job, the job fair is the perfect place for you to begin your journey.”
Tebuteb offered the following tips to job fair attendees:
• Be prompt. The job fair will be held at the Hibiscus Hall of Crowne Plaza on Sept. 15, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Come prepared. Bring multiple copies of your résumé or other useful information such as your driver’s license, mayor’s ID card, or birth certificate.
• Dress professionally. Come to the event well-groomed. first impressions are very important.
• Have a positive attitude. Smile often and frown less.
• Be honest when filling out the job application or speaking with an employer. In other words, cast all doubts aside; ask questions: your level of interest in the job is noticeable. Not asking questions may be misinterpreted by the employer.
• Visit as many employers as possible. Gather resources from education, training or employment agencies.
• Expect the unexpected. On-the-spot interviews have led to employment offers in previous job fairs.
• Don’t forget to provide employers with your contact information and take note of the employer’s contact information for follow-up purposes.
