THE CNMI Department of Labor began the first of six village outreach programs on Tuesday in Garapan, with the Skill Up CNMI Expo taking place on the grounds of the Carolinian Affairs Office.
Frances Torres, director of the Workforce Investment Agency, said the expo is intended to help the youth, dislocated workers, and adult workers access training that will enable them to enter the workforce. Torres said qualified U.S. workers can have their training paid for with funds from the U.S. Department of Labor.
Present at the expo were representatives from the Northern Marianas Technical Institute, Northern Marianas College, Island Training Solutions, and other entities.
“We understand that people are experiencing barriers from Covid-19. They may have lost their jobs or they just don’t know where to go anymore, so we brought together the training providers. Through the program, if [individuals are] eligible we can pay for their training,” Torres said.

The Skill Up CNMI Expo continues on Wednesday, Aug. 9 at the Tanapag Youth Center; Thursday, Aug. 10 at the Kagman Community Center; and Friday, Aug. 11 at the Koblerville Youth Center. All expos run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
On Tinian, the Skill Up CNMI Expo takes place on Aug. 17 at the Tinian Public Library. On Rota, it will be held on Aug. 31 at a location that will be announced soon.
There is no cost to participate in the expo.
